Don Knabe Golf Center & Junior Academy serves as a resource for Norwalk-area golfers • BY GREG BALL

hanks to the efforts of some commu-
nity-minded elected officials and the
Los Angeles County Department of
Parks and Recreation system, an old public
golf course in Norwalk has been rebuilt and
re-energized with a vision of becoming an
asset to juniors, seniors, veterans and other
golfers in the community.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice
Hahn opened the Don Knabe Golf Center &
Junior Academy on July 17 on the site of the
old Norwalk Golf Course and is the 20th golf
course in the Los Angeles County Depart-
ment of Parks and Recreation system, the na-
tion's largest publicly owned golf course
system. Rather than simply remodeling the
facility, the county razed the 12-acre site and
started from scratch, a project that took ap-
proximately nine months to complete.
The nine-hole, 700-yard layout designed
by Gary Bye features holes ranging from 50
to 100 yards with large, bentgrass greens. The
