A FITTING TRIBUTE
n LOUISE SOLHEIM WAS AN ICON OF THE GAME
T
he golf world lost an Arizona legend on July 8 with
the passing of Louise Solheim at the age of 99.
Long admired for her behind-the-scenes work, the
wife of late Ping founder Karsten Solheim played a
significant role in the company's creation and
helped her husband build the putter giant
into one of the most successful golf
equipment businesses in the game.
I met Karsten for the first time in
the spring of 1964 and we became
friends. He was extremely serious
about his inventions and I liked him
immediately as he started describing the
engineering of his clubs, which at the time
was way beyond my engineering knowledge.
He and Louise were true ambassadors for golf in the
state of Arizona, and in 1988 they donated $2 million
to help fund the construction of ASU Karsten Golf
Course in Tempe.
In a fitting tribute, the Sun Devils women's golf
team – which has called ASU Karsten home for nearly
three decades – recently claimed its eighth national
title and 10th individual crown.
Both Louise and Karsten would no doubt be very
proud and honored by that achievement.
