U.S. OPEN SUNDAY IS A FATHER'S DAY
TRADITION LIKE NO OTHER
BY joe passov
I
t was Father's Day, 2001. Dinner was on the table
and was cooling quickly. I turned to the gathered
family and said, "Dad and I will be right in. We
just want to watch these last few putts." For
decades, unless there was a Monday 18-hole play-
off, the U.S. Open has concluded on the third Sunday in
June – Father's Day. This Sunday was no exception, and
the drama that unfolded couldn't have been more aston-
ishing. The fact that dad was right there with me made it
that much sweeter.
There are countless reasons why the U.S. Open is my fa-
vorite major. First, it's the national championship of the
country where I was born, bred and reside. Second, it in-
variably offers the most exacting test in all of tournament
golf. The golfer who wins has survived both physically
and mentally. The narrowest fairways, densest rough and
firmest, fastest greens in the game are hallmarks of a U.S.
