● COURSE SPOTLIGHT OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE ❘ WINTER 2017 ❘ obsports.com J ust outside the tony destination of Scottsdale, Arizona, golfers can dis- cover a course that's as enjoyable to play as it is visually stunning, all the while feeling like they've escaped to a natural wonderland far away from the city. Eagle Mountain Golf Club, in Fountain Hills, is a par-71, 6,800-yard Scott Miller design that capitalizes on its spectacular desert landscape. And while the majestic views make playing Eagle Mountain a memorable experience, it's also a player- friendly course, with large, gently undu- lating greens, wide fairways and rough areas that slope back to the fairways to help minimize errant shots. The course recently completed a fairway renovation project that has significantly improved playing conditions. The three- month, $100,000 undertaking added new drainage in problem areas and replaced soil and turf that had been damaged by the long-term effects of required re- claimed-water usage. The early reviews have been nothing but positive, with some golfers claiming conditions to be the best they've been since the course opened in 1996. Now players can focus less on the turf issues and more on the many qualities that make Eagle Mountain a favorite of locals and tourists. Hilly terrain and elevation changes ensure that no two shots are alike, and its claim to fame is having "The Best Finishing Hole in the State." The seemingly straightforward par-4 plays to 420 yards from the back tee and initially wows players with spectacular valley and desert views from its elevated tee boxes. It then challenges them with a series of nine bunkers stretching from the landing area to the green alongside a large pond framing the right side of the hole. "Golfers like coming here for the views, the attraction of playing desert golf and the fact that it's player-friendly, and I think people keep coming back because of those factors" said Bret Greenwood, the General Manager at Eagle Mountain. "We have enough tee boxes that a really good player can be challenged by playing from the tips, but for the average golfer, it's very friendly and people don't get beat up like they might at other desert courses." Pre- or post-round, The Grille offers a casual atmosphere with a variety of dining options, and the full-service golf shop car- ries all the top brands. The Overlook Pavil- ion can accommodate up to 120 guests for special events, and it's no surprise that the venue comes with views as stunning as those found on the golf course.
