OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE ❘ WINTER 2017 ❘ obsports.com ● FROM THE GALLERY David McLay Kidd GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT Orrin Vincent OB SPORTS FOUNDER L ike most of us, I got involved in the game as a player. Since that day in the summer of 1953, I have learned to love the game in so many different ways. Here are just a few… Working on the maintenance crew on an early summer morning pro- vides a great time of reflection, feeling the sense of nature as you breath the aroma of freshly cut grass while admiring your work. Playing tournament golf is as challenging as it gets, and tests every sense the brain and body can produce. The "rush" is unmatched. Watching your children play can be unnerving, yet very satisfying – it is certainly more difficult than playing yourself. Caddying is a great experience in so many ways; especially when it is for your son in the Open Championship at Muirfield or for your daughter in the U.S. Women's Amateur. Building courses is very hard for the obvious reasons, but it is thrilling to see others enjoy the product upon completion. It is nice knowing your work will be enjoyed for gener- ations to come. Teaching is so much a part of golf. Having given over 20,000 lessons, the coaching ranges from "newbies" to PGA Tour players. All have been rewarding. And speaking of people, that is No. 1 on my list. I love other golfers and all those whom with I have had the pleasure to work. Golfers are just great people. Most kids who grow up in golf and stay involved have a happy career … I know I did! W hat other sport allows you to explore the natural world, creates friend- ships, develops trust, teaches manners and sportsmanship? As the son of a Scottish greenskeeper, so many lessons were taught on the golf course. I came to understand the flora and fauna around me as we played. I was taught to respect everything about the game, the course and my fellow golfers. No other sport teaches so much while we play. There is also the sheer joy of a well-struck golf shot, the ball arching away in the direction one intended. One single shot like that in a round is all we need to keep us coming back. My grandfather once told me, "Golf shows the true measure of a man." How right he was.
