R
oss Farnsworth left a signifi-
cant legacy in the greater
Phoenix area when he
passed away in 2013, and now he'll
be remembered every day at Sun-
land Springs Golf Club.
The 27-hole Mesa facility recently
completed construction on an ex-
pansive new outdoor dining area at
its clubhouse, honoring its founder
and the influential real estate
developer by naming it the Ross
Farnsworth Patio.
"He designed the golf courses
that we have here at Sunland
Springs and absolutely loved the
game," said Jay Larscheid, the PGA
General Manager at Sunland
Springs. "The patio was named in
his honor for the commitment he
made to the community."
The structure is approximately
1,440 square feet and can accom-
modate about 100 people. It fea-
tures flat-screen TVs, heaters and a
fire pit to keep guests comfortable
during the cool winter evenings,
and misters to help take the edge
off the summer heat.
Perhaps the most impressive
part about the project is how the
community of Sunland Springs
came together to make it happen.
In early 2016, 400 residents of Sun-
land Springs Village invested
$5,000 each to purchase the golf
course from Farnsworth Compa-
nies. The members then raised
more than $200,000 to go toward
the patio construction, and the
Farnsworth family donated $25,000.
"The support is something like
I've never seen," Larscheid said.
"Going back to when the members
bought the golf course, a lot of peo-
ple had a vision for what this place
could be and what the patio addi-
tion would mean to the club, the
village, and our members."
