A ttention is often given to the warm weather in Southern California, but now that winter is upon us, we're just as likely to see a cooler day on the course. So with that in mind, here are a few ways you can keep your game hot when the weather goes cold. u Bring a few comfortable thin layers of clothes, especially if you're playing early in the morn- ing. Try not to drape yourself in thick clothes as they will make it harder to rotate during the swing. Thin layers will help provide warmth, but also allow you to have a bigger range of motion in the swing. u Keep your hands warm. It's hard to feel your swing when you can't feel your hands. An inexpen- sive hand warmer in your pocket is a great way to help if your fin- gers are frozen. u Keep your ball warm. Just as you would with a hand warmer for your hands, don't be shy about keeping your ball in your pocket as much as you can after the com- pletion of a hole. As the golf ball's temperature drops, the ball won't compress against the club face as much, which causes distance loss. A warm ball will travel better than a frozen one. u Hit a little bit more club on your approach shots. When the temperature is chilly, the ball will travel less distance in the air. Take an extra club to ensure that you get the ball all the way to the put- ting surface. u Wear a warm hat or beanie. A lot of body heat is lost through the head. Having a warm garment over your head and ears will actu- ally help keep the warmth in your body and preserve your energy for much longer.
