I
t's been a busy first few
months on the job for
Director of Agronomy
Andrew Rebman – with even
more golf course beautifica-
tion projects planned in the
days and weeks ahead.
Not long after arriving at
Classic Club in August, Reb-
man began preparations for
the course's fall overseed and
aerification process in which
the grass transitions from
summer bermuda to winter
rye. The maintenance team
also tended to landscaping,
fertilization, trimming, and
cleaning of the pump sta-
tions. The course re-opened
for the season on Nov. 11.
"Overseeding went well
and we had a very good
catch," Rebman said. "The
weather was a bit warmer
than we would have liked for
the first 10 days, which made
it a challenge keeping the
seedbed moist. This slightly
delayed germination of the
seed and set back the start of
our planned mowing sched-
ule. But we were able to
make this up prior to opening
and golfers can expect noth-
ing but great conditions."
Upcoming projects on the
maintenance schedule – none
of which will impede play –
include increasing the num-
ber of annual flower plant-
ings, additional landscaping
and tree trimming.
And while he's only been
on the grounds for a short
time, Rebman is unabashed
when it comes to what sets
Classic Club apart.
"Our location, combined
with a unique landscape de-
sign dominated by pine trees,
gives us unobstructed sweep-
ing views of the surrounding
landscape that makes you
feel more like you are in the
mountains rather than in the
desert," he said. "But most
of all, we have 18 brilliantly
designed holes by 'The King'
himself, Arnold Palmer, each
one good enough to be a sig-
nature hole, creating a chal-
lenging and memorable
experience for players of all
levels. I've only been here for
a few months, but it's easy to
see why Classic Club is truly
a special place."
