l TOUR REPORT OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x FALL 2016 x obsports.com dates to 1928 and has been a frequent Mexican Open host, where winners have included Roberto de Vicenzo, Ben Crenshaw and Jay Haas. Displaying his impish Irish humor, Rory McIlroy remarked, upon the event moving from Trump Doral Miami to Mexico, "We'll just jump over the wall." In the New York Metropolitan Area, Barclays is out as title sponsor of the first FedEx Cup Playoff event, re- placed by Northern Trust, which gives up its sponsorship of February's L.A. tournament at Riviera. There's a new venue as well, Glen Oaks on Long Island, a 1971 Joe Fin- ger design that enjoys superb condi- tioning, courtesy of superintendent Craig Currier, who formerly tended the grass at Bethpage Black. Down in the Carolinas, the annual Wells Fargo event in May swaps out one Tom Fazio product, Quail Hollow in Charlotte, for another, Eagle Point in Wilmington, due to Quail Hollow assuming hosting duties of August's PGA Championship. The exclusive, 16-year-old Eagle Point features Fazio's typical gorgeous bunker sculpting and large, contoured greens. Finally, two old friends are back on the schedule. Of course, Torrey Pines North never left, but you might not recognize the Farmers Insurance Open co-host after a Tom Weiskopf re-design that fea- tures flipped nines, larger, flatter greens, re-built bunkers, and short grass around the greens. The other altered veteran is the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms, this year's venue for Tiger's Quicken Loans Na- tional tournament. Once called the TPC at Avenel, it was a somewhat unpopular layout that hosted the PGA Tour from 1987 through 2006 (mostly the Kemper Open) but a complete makeover in 2007 has boosted its likability. >> JOE PASSOV ON TWITTER.
