farewell to the king
Arnold Palmer's impact on the game is immeasurable
E
very era has its marquee player. From Bobby Jones to Ben
Hogan to Jack Nicklaus, these are golfers who defined their
generations. The same cannot be said for Arnold Palmer, who
passed away on Sunday, September 25 at the age of 87.
That's because Arnold Palmer's impact on the game
can't be limited to a single generation. His impact,
popularity and appeal span generations.
He put golf on the map. Made it cool and accept-
able for the masses. He was Tiger Woods before
there was a Tiger Woods.
I never got to meet Arnold Palmer. And yet I have
more memories of him than I can count. I suppose the
same can be said for many of us.
With an artful blend of skill and charisma few athletes have ever
displayed, he had an incalculable influence on the game. He was
golf's first folk hero, connecting with his army of fans in a way that
had never been seen before – and hasn't been seen since.
And while his accomplishments on the tournament stage are the
stuff of legend, his success wasn't limited to his superior play.
Upon being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 –
the first golfer ever to do so – he was praised not just for his impact
on American sports, but for his impact on American character.
The King may be gone, but his influence on the game will continue
for generations to come.
