COURSES The greenside bunker designs, in most cases "were made smaller and moved closer to the greens in order to make the bunkering more pleasing to the eye on the approach, but also to make for a less challenging shot for high handicappers but more challenging for lower handicappers," Kulow said. The new tee boxes and other enhancements have also improved the course's playability, particularly on the par 3s and the slight dogleg holes, Kulow said. "What previously appeared to be somewhat ambiguous tee shots that didn't leave the golfer with a sense that they needed to hit the ball to any specific spot have now been shaped in a way that not only adds a challenge to the hole but also gives the hole its own feel," he said. "In simple terms, the fairway bunkers really make the hole 'pop' visually from the tee and help create a level of excitement about the risk-reward value." But while the course has benefited greatly from the enhancements, William P. Bell's original character remains, including postage stamp-size greens and a strong kikuyu grass presence that makes for challenging approach shots. It remains a 6,080-yard, par-70 track from the back tees, so short-iron consistency remains essential. And the greens remain the course's major selling point. "The firmness and speed of the greens are the equalizer that counters the short length of the course," Kulow said. "The greens also have very subtle breaks that make for fair but challenging putting." The enhancements aren't limited to the actual 18 holes. The facility has also installed a new chipping green, putting green and practice bunker that "makes for a wonderful short-game area with a variety of shots to work on in a safe and effective manner," Kulow said.
