There's nothing like spending time with a childhood idol
I
n this edition of the Insider, we celebrate the great Arnold
Palmer, whose accomplishments both on and off the golf
course are legendary. Hall of Famer. Entrepreneur.
Spokesman. Humanitarian. Pilot. The list goes on.
He also happens to be a world-class golf course designer with
nearly 300 layouts under his belt, including the track
here at Classic Club. We'll take a look at that part of
his legacy in this issue, as well as highlight some
of his lesser-known – but equally impressive –
achievements. We'll also shed a little light on the
origins of his famous eponymous beverage.
Like many of you, I have been a fan of The
King for as long as I can recall and have many
fond memories. As a kid growing up in Erie, Penn.,
I remember attending the Erie Charity Classic. One year
about 30 years ago, Mr. Palmer came to support and play in the
Classic, because it wasn't far from where he lived in Latrobe. I re-
member watching him play, and I even got to meet him. He was
a childhood idol of mine, so that alone was a special experience.
But then, several years later, I met him as he was working on
the design at Classic Club, and I've since been able to spend
quite a bit of time with him here. To be able to have a glass of
wine with my childhood idol, and to have it come full circle like
that, is a pretty cool thing.
