Only time will tell if another golf great will ever emerge
I
t's been quite a roller-coaster year on the PGA Tour's biggest
stages, with this season's major championships having produced
quite a thrill ride for both avid and casual followers of the game.
From Jordan Spieth's collapse at Augusta and Dustin
Johnson's breakthrough at Oakmont to the epic duel
between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson at
Royal Troon and Jason Day's last-minute near-miss
heroics at Baltusrol, the game's top players have
certainly given golf fans their money's worth.
Is it enough? Stalwarts such as Spieth, Johnson,
Day and Rory McIlroy will continue to light up the
golf world, but if history is any indication it's unlikely
we'll see another Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods
for years to come. Gone, for better or worse, are the days of a
once-in-a-lifetime player dominating in a way that captivates entire
continents. At least for the time being.
Speaking of entire continents, we have a couple of big-time events
ahead of us that will soon put golf front and center before a world-
wide audience. More then 40 countries will vie for gold in Rio as
golf returns to the Olympics this month, and in September the U.S.
will battle Europe on home turf as the two continents tussle at the
Ryder Cup over bragging rights for the next two years.
Here's hoping both events produce enough fireworks to light a
spark under our next generation's greatest player ever to tee it up.
