major moments
Final round of the U.S. Open is a special Father's Day event
T
hey say the Masters is a tradition unlike any other. That may
or may not be true depending on your favorite major. For my
money, there's always been something special about the
final round of the U.S. Open held on Father's Day.
There's a unique quality about that Sunday and
the indelible moments it creates. It embodies the
bond golf creates between dads and their kids –
Phil carrying a pager awaiting news of his first
child; Graham McDowell embracing his dad on
the iconic 18th green at Pebble Beach; Justin Rose
pointing toward the sky in honor of his late father
after tapping in on the final hole at Merion. And, of
course, there's the bond Tiger shared with Earl Woods – who was
around on Sunday to cherish two of his son's three U.S. Open
victories. A special day, indeed.
Now a devoted father himself, Tiger made headlines recently as
murmurs swirled that a return to the game might be on the horizon.
It remains to be seen when the greatest player of his generation will
tee it up again competitively, but there is no doubt that Tiger in his
prime produced some of the most memorable shots the game has
ever seen – 10 of which are highlighted in this edition of the Insider.
Also in this issue, you'll find part two of our 2016 Hot Shots Club
Test featuring irons and wedges, an exclusive Q&A with club maker
Bob Vokey and, of course, our annual Father's Day Gift Guide.
