l INSIDE THE GATES OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x SPRING 2016 ous high-profile events including the 2012 NCAA Women's Golf Championship, of- fers two tracks: the North Course and South Course, both of which are very well maintained and meticulously manicured. "Each course has an incredible stretch of finishing holes," Latture said. "Both courses are very playable, but they can be very challenging for golfers of all levels." And though each is classically designed, it's the individual flourishes and charac- teristics that set them apart. "The North has putting surfaces that are contained by the collars and almost always roll toward the center of the green," Latture said. "Also, the tees on the North are rec- tangular and the sand is flashed to the top of the bunkers creating a dramatic effect. The South course putting surfaces are more domed with collars sloping away from the green, while the tees are freeform in shape and the sand is low in the bunkers." The courses have also benefited from re- cent renovations. In 2011 and 2012, the greens on both were converted from bent grass to Miniverde, work which has been "well received by our members – and our turf care folks keep them fast and smooth," Latture said. "We have also reno- vated several bunkers on each course and this is an ongoing project." The practice facility also received an overhaul. Last year, the stationary tee areas on the range were replaced with a more stable surface and high-quality mats. That merely added to one of the finest practice areas in the region, Latture said. "Our practice facility is 19 acres with multiple tee spaces, a wonderful short- game area, two practice putting greens, and a state-of-the-art hitting bay," he said. "You can practice any shot that you might encounter on the golf course at our prac- tice facility. And, our lead instructor is Joe Hallet, a top-50 instructor who teaches several players on the LPGA Tour, includ- ing Stacy Lewis." While the facilities at Vanderbilt are available only to members, their guests, and the Vanderbilt University golf pro- gram (the clubhouse for both teams is lo- cated on their own private short-game practice area), Vanderbilt Legends' turf team maintains the par-3 Little Course next door, which is owned by the Ten- nessee Golf Foundation. "The Little Course offers instruction to golfers of any level. They have great youth programs offered all season, including overnight accommodations for week-long golf camps with guest instructors in the summer months," Latture said. "And our members have unlimited free access to this great little golf course." We are a true golf club. Almost half of our membership are single-digit golfers. It's a fun place to play" – DAVID LATTURE, General Manager, Vanderbilt Legends Club HOT LINKS ›› VISIT Vanderbilt Legends Club online. • • • ›› TAKE A TOUR of the North Course. • • • ›› TAKE A TOUR of the South Course. • • • ›› INQUIRE about memberships.
