1 Learn a Simple Warm-Up Routine. "Do this routine each time before you play or practice in order to let your mind become alerted to the feeling of all parts of your body and its state of being," suggests Paula Thompson, Golf Instructor at Sedona Golf Resort. > Begin by briefly tightening and relaxing your neck and shoulders. > Next, tense your right arm and then relax it and then do the same with your left arm. > Tense and relax your chest, back, and abdomen. > Continue down the body and tense and relax the right leg and the left leg, and then right foot and left foot. This routine will train your body to become familiar with the sensation of being "tense" versus "relaxed" and will help your per- formance. 2 Remember Chromo Therapy. "Chromo Ther- apy is the use of color to en- hance focus and learning," said Thompson. "Research findings re- port that athletes who receive ade- quately enhanced color experiences show a 20 percent increase in strength and performance over those who do not receive adequate color input." > Use red to fire you up if you are feeling depressed or lazy. > Blue and purple will calm you if you are feeling anxious or nerv- ous. > Yellow is a good color for focus. You can either wear the color you respond to best as clothing or in sunglasses that are tinted. 3 Use Anchoring. "Visualize playing a com- pletely perfect golf hole. Or fantasize making a perfect tee shot down the fairway and then the per- fect shot onto the green," said Thompson. "Anchor these perfect thoughts by coming up with a ges- ture you can make to go with your imagined perfect shot." > Scratch your chin, wiggle your nose, tug on your earlobe, etc. > Fire up the gesture/anchor along with the feeling of success re- peatedly until you feel you can bring it up at will. > As you make the gesture, say, "Easy… easy" to restate the positive feeling. > Now, fire the anchor anytime you wish to perform the perfect shot. 4 Reset the Mind with Proper Breathing. "Keeping your breath steady will relieve tension in the muscles, help with awareness, and improve your quality of movement," said Chris- tine Bergmann, Certified Yoga for Golfers Instructor at Sedona Golf Resort. "The quickest way to do so is just close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths in and out through the nose." If you have more time, Bergmann suggests doing this: > Lie on your back with your knees bent.
