"I wanted to give these kids a chance to branch out and meet other kids," said Johnson. "My purpose was to create a melting pot. An opportunity for moms and dads and kids to get together, play golf, and see that everyone had the same life." Johnson is a member of the LPGA Teaching & Club Professional Division, and she imparts her golf – and life – wisdom to her students. She teaches all skill levels and ages, but admits she has a special spot for beginners. "I pride myself on teaching beginners," she said. "With golf in particular, it's important to start off with a great attitude. It's not a sport anyone is automatically good at, so my approach with beginners is to show them how fun it can be. If they get the golf bug and are enjoying themselves, they'll want to pursue the sport and then will improve with time." Johnson believes that with golf, what you get out of the sport is a direct relationship to what you put in. She's constantly motivated to reach even more people with golf. From playing music in her kids' golf lessons to brainstorming ideas for golf TV shows and hosting breast cancer awareness golf events, Johnson is on a mission. "In this modern world of instant gratification and entertainment, we have to be creative with how we're teaching and presenting golf," she said. "Trying to change the game, improve the pace of play, and make it more fun are only going to help the sport grow." LIFE LESSONS A ngelique Johnson has been on both sides of the teaching equation, as a student and a teacher. Here are 4 of her favorite life lessons and golf tips: ‰ Golf teaches you how to make decisions, and the consequences of those decisions. When you make a wrong decision on the course, you learn from it and know what to do the next time you're in that situation. ‰ When I'm playing golf with a group of students, I want everyone to feel 'par-tastic' and 'tee-rific.' Golf should be fun, always. ‰ The left arm does all the work because it is an extension of the club! ‰ P-A-R stands for Practice, Attitude, Results. When you practice with the right attitude, you will get results. TIPS FROM THE PRO Chester Washington Golf Course is where Angelique Johnson calls home.
