SCOTTSDALE
GOLF IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN
While most of the country is busy shoveling driveways and defrosting
windshields this time of year, the Arizona desert – in particular, the
Scottsdale area – is the perfect place to thaw out and work on your
golf game. Your choices abound, but you can't go wrong teeing it up
at the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, McDowell Mountain Golf
Club in Scottsdale, Eagle Mountain Golf Club in Fountain Hills, or
Longbow Golf Club in Mesa. ASU Karsten, a Pete Dye links-style
course, is home to one of the nation's most successful collegiate golf
programs – Arizona State University – yet still open the public. Future
tour pros Phil Mickelson, Paul Casey, and Billy Mayfair are among ASU
alumni who honed their games on it. … Backdropped by the stunning
mountain range after which it was named, McDowell Mountain under-
went extensive renovation in 2011 after Mickelson acquired the oper-
ating rights. After an afternoon round, you'll want to linger and sip
your drink on the Mesquite Grille patio to enjoy the amazing views as
the sun sets behind the majestic Camelback Mountain. … On the
eastern border of Scottsdale, Eagle Mountain is a 1996 Scott Miller
design that winds through canyons, rolling hills, and desert valleys,
with picturesque views of the Red and Camelback mountains. Conve-
niently, the Inn at Eagle Mountain Resort is a boutique hotel in the hills
above the 18th green. … About 20 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale,
Longbow Golf Club is the essence of desert golf with huge fairway
bunkers and striking natural views. It made GolfWeek's list of the Top
100 Resort Courses in 2009 and "Top 20 Courses to Play in Arizona" in
2011. Away from the courses, you can visit several Major League Base-
ball spring training camps in the area beginning in mid-February.
