OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x FALL 2015 x obsports.com l YOUR GAME fi In my era, Jack Nicklaus and Mike Reid were the best drivers of the ball on the PGA Tour. Jack was one of the longest and Mike was one of the shortest but most accu- rate. These days, based on the stats, I'd go with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose as those being among the best. The traits these players all share are a consistent tempo and a strong belief in their ability. When it comes to the tee ball, confidence is so important – and one of the big reasons why these players were, and are, such good drivers. I'm often asked for tips from golfers who want more distance off the tee. Here are 3 that I like: 1 Don't try to add distance by muscling up with the upper body and releasing the club early with the hands and wrists. Allow the upper body to be re- laxed with reasonably light grip pressure. You need to shake the perception that brute force will al- ways equal distance. W e all know how important the short game is to shooting low scores. But, really, is there anything more enjoyable and satisfying in golf than standing on the tee, squaring up, and crushing a ball into the stratosphere? Of course not. And with that, we asked Scott Watkins, Director of Golf Instruction at ASU Karsten Golf Course at Arizona State University, to share his thoughts when it comes to getting more distance off the tee. Here's what we learned… Tee it high and let it fly. GOING LONG n what you need to know about gaInIng dIstance BY scott watkins, pGa
