n three new wedges that can help
you knock It closer to the hole
BY john phipps
M
ore often than not, golfers reach
into their bag for their wedge
before pulling out their putter.
In fact, according to 2014 PGA
Tour statistics, even the best players in the world
only hit half to three-quarters of greens in regula-
tion. That means they are reaching for a wedge
on four to nine of the 18 holes. Mere mortals on
the golf course are likely hitting greens even less.
Today's wedges are customized as much for
how you play as for where you play by offering
different sole grinds and bounce options that aid
in turf interaction and more consistent wedge
play. Here are three new additions to the game:
PING
GLIDE WEDGES
n PING engineered its new
Glide wedges from the
hands down – grip to sole –
to help aid in spin and con-
sistency. The club boasts
three distinct features: a
Dyla-wedge grip; a weight-,
flex-, and balance-optimized
CFS shaft; and a head de-
sign featuring a longer and
offset hosel, along with
three different sole widths
to suit individual players and
course conditions. A unique
finish produces lower fric-
tion between the clubhead
and the grass to create bet-
ter glide through the turf.
NIKE
ENGAGE WEDGE
n Good things come in
threes, and Nike's new
lineup of wedges offer
three sole grinds to fit dif-
ferent types of play and
course conditions. The
Dual Sole Grind gives you
two clubface surfaces, one
for regular shots and the
other for opening up the
face to get more bite on a
shot. The Toe Sweep grind
features a wide toe and
narrow heel to help extri-
cate your ball from poor
lies. The Square Sole
wedge is crafted to work
best on full wedge shots.
CALLAWAY
MACK DADDY
PM-GRIND WEDGE
n Short-game magician
Phil Mickelson and leg-
endary wedgemaker Roger
Cleveland teamed up to
produce one of the most
versatile wedges ever.
They took a Mack Daddy 2
wedge and gave it a higher
toe shape, added the right
metals, and let Phil test it
on Tour until the look and
performance were exactly
what he wanted. From flop
shots to bunker shots, the
PM-Grind makes it easier
than ever to get up and
down like Phil.
