INSIDE WORLDWIDE GOLF SHOPS
youth movement
The future of the game is in capable young hands
I
F NOTHING ELSE, the aftermath of the year's first three
major championships has shown us there's no shortage of
terrific young talent emerging and ready to forge a new era
on the PGA Tour. And with 22-year-old Jordan Spieth blazing a
trail for golf's next generation, the future of the game
appears to be in very capable hands.
Whether it's three college-age amateurs finishing
in the top 12 at last month's Open Championship
or an 18-year-old shooting a 65 in the second
round of the Canadian Open the following week,
these young players are proof positive that it's
never too early to get involved in the game.
We had the good fortune of talking with TaylorMade's
new CEO David Abeles for a profile in this edition of the Insider.
He speaks passionately of the younger generation's importance
to the game and discussed his company's efforts to work with
various national and global institutions to provide competitive
outlets and training to young players, as well as improving
equipment that will allow juniors to enjoy the game even more.
Following the Open Championship, Spieth said he wouldn't
be surprised to see an amateur win a major in the next decade or
so. The way things are headed, it may happen sooner than that.
