Donald – to synchronize with the
amateurs. Many times the amateur
is still taking the club back as the
pro is making contact with the ball.
My students are usually amazed
when they see this.
Remember: Keep your grip ten-
sion light and your swing smooth,
but don't swing slow!
KEEP YOUR HEAD UP
When you ask an amateur, partic-
ularly the mid- to high-handicap-
pers, what they are working on with
their swing, they will tell you they
are working on keeping their head
down or still. But I tell them your
head moves in the
same direction that
the swing is going.
The head should
move forward and
up after impact.
Generally, you
don't top the ball because you lift
up or your head comes up at im-
pact; you top it because you stay
on your back foot at impact and the
club bottoms out early and makes
contact with the ball on the up-
swing. If amateur golfers would let
the head move forward and up after
impact, they would have a much
better chance of making good con-
tact with the ball.
PERFECT YOUR PITCH SHOT
The pitch shot has many charac-
teristics of an underhand or side-
arm throw. The swing of the arms
and the forward movement of the
body are in sync, like a small
throwing motion.
Practice hitting short pitch shots
with one arm. One caveat – this drill
is easier if you play and throw from
the same side. If you play right-
handed and throw with your right
hand, take your wedge and make
some small under-handed right-
hand swings. Once you have made
a few one-arm practice swings, hit
some one-arm pitch shots.
After you can make good contact
with your one-arm pitch shots, go
back to hitting them with both arms
in a conventional way, but keep the
feeling of the one-arm swing.
