randel Chamblee has made it
his life's work to know every-
thing there is to know about
golf – and know it he does.
From the swings of those who played a
century ago to the top stars on the PGA
Tour today, Chamblee knows the game
of golf inside and out. Here, he tells us
a little bit more about growing up play-
ing golf, his favorite players on tour
and why he thinks everyone should
play golf in Scottsdale.
How did you first get into playing
golf? When I was young, I played foot-
ball and baseball, ran track and rode
horses – but mostly horses. I had a
classmate who was a good junior golfer.
He was interested in riding horses, so
he rode horses with me and I played
golf with him. I soon quit football –
everyone was four times as big as me –
and knew early on that I wanted to play
golf professionally.
I then played at the University of
Texas, where I was a three-time All-
American. During my college years I
played a few tournaments in Arizona,
and I started dating a girl from there –
the best female junior golfer in the
country. I had such good experiences
playing golf and visiting Arizona that I
moved here full-time in 1992. Now I'm
raising three kids here! I split time these
days traveling for the Golf Channel,
