VEGAS MEMORIES
A REAL LONG SHOT
Golfers who travel to Las Vegas often return
with a good story to tell. In honor of this
month's cover feature, we asked OB Sports
Chairman and Founder Orrin Vincent to
share his favorite Las Vegas golf memory.

ack in the seventies, I always enjoyed
playing in the Sahara Invitational, which
was the Las Vegas event on the PGA
Tour in those days.
I remember one year playing behind Jim
Dent, who was the longest hitter on tour in
those years. We were on the 18th hole at the
Sahara Country Club and it was getting dark.
We really wanted to finish so we wouldn't get
caught out there and have to come back and
finish in the morning.
It was a reachable par 5 and there was a
holdup because Jim was going to go for the
green in two. I had the honor and the guys in
my group encouraged me to go ahead and hit
– after all, it was Jim Dent out there.
I went ahead and let it rip. He was standing
over his second shot getting ready to go for it
when my ball landed right next to him and
rolled on past. That was the good news.
The bad news was that he was waiting for
me when I got up to my ball and gave me the
worst stare that could be imagined. He also
had a couple of choice words.
Well, at least I can say I once outdrove the
PGA Tour's longest hitter!
