J
erry Dunphy, a longtime anchorman for
ABC's Channel 7 affiliate in Los Ange-
les, used to lead off his nightly broad-
cast with his signature catchphrase: "From
the desert to the sea, to all of Southern Cali-
fornia, good evening."
He was alluding to the incredible geo-
graphic diversity of Southern California, an
incredibly rich area that includes the ocean,
deserts, mountains, riparian area, dense
urban clusters in the flatlands, lushly
forested canyons, and so much more.
And nowhere can a person get a first-
hand look at all that diversity than on
Southern California's golf courses. From
those situated right on the coast to the more
arid but equally beautiful courses of the
Coachella Valley, to courses located in the
rolling hills and canyons of the area's
higher elevations, the natural splendor of
Southern California is always on full, living
display at its golf courses.
That's why it's fitting that this month's
cover story spotlights Tijeras Creek Golf
Club, a Rancho Santa Margarita facility that
features two incredibly distinctive nines –
the parkland-inspired front side and a back
nine that is set on a ridgeline with elevation
changes and spectacular views of the native
landscape, which features hundreds of old-
growth trees and chaparral.
It's the combination of those two nines
that makes Tijeras Creek one of the most
unique courses in a region that has no
shortage of them.
