OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x WINTER 2014 x obsports.com l MEMBERS ONLY P rescott, Arizona, is routinely listed as one of the most desir- able leisure spots in the country and no small part of that is Talking Rock, a private master-planned community and its highly acclaimed golf course. But unlike many private, gated com- munities that feature a golf course as a prime selling point, the course at Talking Rock had priority. "There are places where homes are visible, but they're set back 50 yards from the course," said Gen- eral Manager Jim Leisenring. "The developer gave [golf course designer] Jay Morrish the first chance to route the golf course the way he wanted, and any land developed after that had to fit into his vision. So while there are homes, this is not a course where you feel surrounded." Prescott is located about 100 miles southwest of Flagstaff and 100 miles north of Phoenix. At 5,000 feet, it rarely gets above 90 degrees in the summer and while it gets some snow in the winter, the course is open year-round. "And there is so much peace and quiet," Leisenring said. "No traffic, none of the hustle and bustle. All the things you'd want for a second home or place to retire." The course plays 7,350 yards from the tips, but seven sets of tees allow the course to play as little as 5,100 yards. And it's easily walkable, something "that is rare for a residentially driven golf course," Leisenring said. There are 1,500 home sites in the com- munity and while only about one in three residents is driven by golf, Leisen- ring said, the golf course is more than an amenity – it's the centerpiece. The Arizona Ranch-style clubhouse is a community hub, both for its dining and its on-site coffee shop, which also serves as a small general store. "Our club is 20 minutes to town, so if you're up here for the weekend or some friends are coming over, and you need a quick gallon of milk or a quick breakfast sandwich, it's a great convenience," Leisenring said. Talking Rock also offers two tennis courts, an 11,000-square-foot fitness cen- ter and a swimming pool. It's also ide- ally located for a myriad of outdoor pur- suits, including a series of hiking trails.
