I
f it were easy,
everyone would do
it, the old adage
goes. And there's noth-
ing easy about play-
ing 126 holes of
golf in one day
with temperatures
north of 100 degrees
in the Arizona desert.
But that didn't stop
Longbow Golf Club's
PGA General Manager
Jay Larscheid from
doing what he loves:
raising money to help
others.
For the fifth straight
year, Larscheid partici-
pated in PGA Golf Day
on August 6 to raise
funds for the Scotts-
dale-based Southwest
Section PGA Founda-
tion. The money
Larscheid raises is used
to host the Arizona
Special Olympics Golf
Championship, as well
as other SWSPGA
Foundation activities.
"The next couple of
days afterward I'm
pretty sore," Larscheid
said. "But seeing the
joy in those athletes
makes it all worthwhile.
It is truly gratifying."
Larscheid teed it up
as a single at Longbow
at 5:29 in the morning
and holed his final putt
at 4:30 in the afternoon,
completing seven full
rounds with scores of
77-75-81-72-77-79-78.
And while he was
playing the course as a
single, he was by no
means out there alone.
"I got a lot of encour-
aging messages via so-
cial media and text
throughout the day,"
he said. "I also have
had some of the Special
Olympics athletes
come out and follow
me around for some
holes cheering me on."
Larscheid raised over
$11,000 last year
through donations
and set a goal of
$12,500 for this
year. "I have some
work to do, but still
hope to attain it."
So far, he's raised just
shy of $10,000. But do-
nations are still coming
in. You can click on the
link below if you'd like
to donate. It's easy.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
TO OVERSEED IN FALL
N
ow is the time of year when many golf
courses throughout the Southwest un-
dergo the overseed process in order to be
in optimal shape for the peak-season win-
ter months. We caught up with OB Sports
Senior VP of Agronomy, Construction and
Landscape Luke Beardmore to learn about
the process and why it's so important.
What's the No. 1 benefit of overseed-
ing? Overseeding provides green, healthy
turf and consistent playing conditions year-
round. Without it, the bermuda
grass would go dormant (brown)
for several months each winter.
How much seed does it take
to overseed a golf course? Ap-
proximately 650 pounds per acre.
How long does the process take? The
golf course closure period can vary, but
OB's average is two weeks.
Why do courses close during that pe-
riod? To allow for the new "crop" of grass
to grow in. Most of the grasses that we
overseed with take 4-6 days to germinate,
and then need to establish before mowing.
How long does it take for the course
to return to ideal conditions? About 2-3
weeks after the course re-opens.
