DESTINATIONS
Sun Devil Phil Mickelson worked
with original course designer Randy
Heckenkemper on a $1.2 million
makeover. With a little more turf, a few
less bunkers, and the addition of waste
areas and rock walls to capture misfires,
the-course-formerly-know-as-Sanctuary
is more player-friendly. Tee-to-fairway
shots are shorter and easier. Still, better
golfers will be challenged with the
added length that stretches the course to
7,072 yards from the back tees.

Hilly terrain and lightening-
fast greens school even skilled
golfers at the top of their class.
Pete Dye put his diabolical
touches on the links-style course in a
2003 update project. The most devilish is
on the 16th hole, a par-3 that requires a
carry over water to a two-tiered green
that's just 26 yards deep.
STARTER PLATE
Eagle Mountain Golf Club,
Fountain Hills
This is one of those courses you can
play over and over again. Few holes are
next to each other. Fairways wind
through box canyons, ensuring several
different ways to play shots. Naturally
contoured land will have you testing
your appetite for risks vs. rewards.
"The east side of the greater Phoenix
area presents elevation changes and
breathtaking views across the entire val-
ley," McGinty said. "There's tons of cool
stuff to see, and Eagle Mountain is a
great course."
SALAD SERVICE
Raven Golf Club, Phoenix
Playing through the pines while in
the desert? With extensive greenery, pine
tree-lined fairways, rolling terrain, and
grassy swales, Raven offers a traditional,
links-style golf experience that's "a nice
little switch from desert courses,"
McGinty said.
