P
rivate country clubs are known for their
genteel atmosphere, membership-oriented
service, and superior course conditions.
Pinewood Country Club, located in the vil-
lage of Munds Park, Arizona, about 20 minutes
south of Flagstaff, is all that – and so much more.
And, when you take a look at all the amenities it
has to offer, Pinewood certainly stands out.
"We have a pool, an exercise facility, pickleball,
tennis courts, a large activities center for kids and
even a 100-seat venue presenting live theater dur-
ing the summer," Head Golf Professional Brian
Obillo said. "From a country club standpoint, I
don't know many that offer as much as we do."
The club also is unique in that it allows non-
members access to play the course.
"The priority is to the members for golf play, but
when we have open tee times, it's an opportunity
for non-members to enjoy the course as well,"
Obillo said.
The bulk of the club's membership is made up of
people who live in the Phoenix area. Most own sec-
ond homes in the village of Munds, which has a
permanent population of fewer than 700 people.
"We're only about 90 minutes from Phoenix so
this is ideal in the summer for Phoenix folks. In-
stead of 115-degree temperatures they can be enjoy-
ing 85-degree weather up here."
At 6,500-feet, the course is generally closed from
November through mid-April. But though it does
snow, the high elevation does not make this a tradi-
tional mountain course. The course, which opened
in 1972, is mostly flat, with fully mature trees and
little elevation change.
"It's an excellent, player-friendly course, very
lush with smaller greens that is a lot of fun,"
Obillo said. "I think everyone has a really good
time playing it."
