OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x SUMMER 2014 l EQUIPMENT SPHERES OF INFLUENCE n 3 GOLF BALLS AMATEUR GOLFERS CAN RELY ON TO HELP THEIR GAMES T his month's U.S. Open showcased the skill sets of the world's most talented golfers. It also was a stage from which we witnessed the performances of the most technologically so- phisticated golf balls ever manufactured in the history of the game. Starring are Nike's 20XI, Titleist's Pro V1 and Pro V1x, Srixon's Z-Star and many other Tour-level balls, such as the TaylorMade Lethal used by Martin Kaymer on his way to winning the Open. And now, for the rest of us, here's a quick look at the golf balls spe- cially engineered to help amateurs achieve their best performance on the links. TITLEIST NXT TOUR n Titleist's Pro V1 ball fran- chise is the most successful on Tour. So far this year, more than 75 wins have been recorded by pros playing the Pro V1 or V1x. Fortunately, Titleist has a soft spot for amateurs. Lit- erally. The dual core of the NXT Tour ball was de- signed with a softer outer portion to lower compres- sion and lessen spin. Flight, distance and spin are similar to the Pro V, but the NXT gives amateurs better feel and control. NIKE RZN n Nike's 20IX is so 2013 that even Tiger is trying its new RZN ball (albeit the tour pro version Platinum model). For the rest of us, there are RZN Red and White (Black is a pro model as well). The three- piece Red and White balls are 10 percent softer than the 20IX, thanks to a new resin-core design dubbed Speedlock that promises better spin (White) and longer carry (Red) for a wider range of everyday golfers. SRIXON Q-STAR n Golfers who lust after the feel and precision of a Tour-level ball but lack a Tour-level swing speed can expect better spin and more control around the greens with the new Srixon Q-Star. Engineered for the average golfer, the Q-Star offers a perfect combina- tion of distance and con- trol off the tee and spin performance around the green – coupled with its superior soft feel and vi- sual performance of Pure White and Tour Yellow.
