P
GA Tour players can breath a
sigh of relief. Television view-
ers and arm-chair quarter-
backs equipped with high-definition
TVs won't be able to have the same
impact on the game –
or their scorecards –
in the future.
When Justin Rose
was penalized at The
Players Championship
earlier this year after
his ball moved prior to a chip shot,
golf's ruling bodies determined it
was only possible to spot the infrac-
tion with the use of sophisticated TV
technology. Since the movement was
not "reasonably discernible to the
naked eye" the penalty was re-
scinded under decision 18-4.
"It's an interesting situation," said
David Stead, the PGA General Man-
ager at Langdon Farms Golf Club in
Aurora, Oregon. "I agree with in-
stant replay because you want to get
the call right. But if the ball moves
while a player is looking away, he'd
never know it."
Which is one reason why Stead
believes the PGA Tour made the
right call in this situation. Allowing
TV viewers to call in infractions is
another story, he said, pointing out
that sometimes the rules run con-
trary to the spirit of the game.
"In this instance, the player is not
getting a significant advantage over
the field," he said. "The ball is not
necessarily moving to a better spot,
in fact it could be worse."
