ROGER
BILLINGS
Experience, passion and
plenty of patience pay off
R
oger Billings first came to
Chardonnay in 1991 and led
the facility as its PGA Gen-
eral Manager for the ensuing five
years. A decade later in 2006, he
returned to the club's top job over-
seeing and supervising the man-
agers that direct Chardonnay Golf
Club's day-to-day operations.
What do you enjoy about working
at Chardonnay? The variety of very
skilled professionals that I have the
privilege to work alongside; and, of
course, the ambiance of working at
a golf club that is in the heart of the
Napa Valley wine country.
What is your greatest strength on
the job? Patience and a level de-
meanor! My wife would tell you
that I am patient to a fault and that I
rarely, if ever, lose my temper.
What one word would you use to
describe yourself? Confident.
What might someone be sur-
prised to know about you? I am a
twin! My twin brother, Doug, and I
were the first set of twins born in
the Army hospital in Landstuhl,
Germany, when my Dad was sta-
tioned in Europe in the Air Force.
What do you like to do when you
aren't working? Spend time with
my grandkids!
What words or phrase do you
most overuse? No problem!
Your most treasured possession?
The American flag that draped my
father's casket when he was buried.
Favorite thing about the game of
golf? The precision required to play
the game well; and that every round
played is a new experience.
What is your best score ever and
where? 66 on the Valley Course at
Marriott's Desert Springs Resort.
You can only play one hole at
Chardonnay for the rest of your life.
Which is it? No. 8, a par 3. The green
measure over 16,000 square feet, is
shaped like a banana, has five sepa-
rate tiers and is 90 yards wide. De-
pending on the pin placement, from
the tips it can measure as short as
157 yards and as long as 209 yards.
Golf Digest has ranked it as one of
America's Most Fun Holes!
What is your fondest memory on
the golf course? Winning the First
Annual Wilson Staff Member Golf
Tournament at Pebble Beach in
1993. Shot a two-over-par 74 at Peb-
ble Beach the first day and closed
with a three-under-par 69 at Spy-
glass Hill on day two. A very close
second are the multiple times I got
to play golf with Michael Jordan
here at Chardonnay Golf Club back
in the early 1990s.
"My motto
on the job?
Do some-
thing! Either
lead, follow
or get out of
the way!"
