OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x SPRING 2014 x obsports.com college, co-owns several courses with him and has helped shepherd his pro- fessional career. They've also formed a close bond – it was Loy who offered a moving video tribute to Mickelson upon the occasion of his 2012 induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame. We recently caught up with Loy to talk about his career in the game. When did you first become involved in golf? I played in high school while working at a golf course. I went on to play in college and then became a col- lege golf coach, golf agent and, finally, a golf course owner. What's your favorite aspect of the game? The competition and the people I'm associated with because of the game. Who's had the greatest in- fluence on your career? My coaches. They always chal- lenged me to be better than I was. What is your secret to success as a coach? Passion and compassion for my players – and the will to win! What's it like working with big-name players on the PGA Tour such as Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald? The best! They both are great guys and they want to be the best at what they do. What are the dynamics of that part- nership with Phil? Awesome – every day of my life. He has great vision and I execute. We trust each other implicitly. What is your fondest memory from all the years you've known him? There are too many to mention. He and [wife] Amy bless my life everyday. How did you and Phil become in- volved in golf course ownership? Our golf members at Chaparral Pines sought us out to save the club. From there it just seemed the right thing to do and continues to grow each year. You have been working with OB Sports for several years now. What do you like best about the company? The people, their passion, and their in- tegrity to help us all succeed. What is your fondest memory on the golf course? Caddying for Phil when he won the Tucson Open as a young college player. What one word would you use to de- scribe yourself? Persistent. What is your greatest achievement? Coaching young men to be better than they thought they could be. Your best score ever? 63, in Albu- querque, New Mexico, when I was playing a high school golf tournament. In addition to golf, what are some of your other hobbies and interests? Sailing and ASU athletics. What is your most treasured posses- sion? [My relationship with] Phil and Amy and my family. Who would be in your dream four- some? Any game is a good game at my age. I love people.
