First Tee – Coachella Valley Magazine • Fall 2023 • 9 I n 2013, as an 11-year- old, I migrated from Mexico to the Coa- chella Valley. Leaving my family behind was difficult, and not being unable to understand English made it even more challenging. To help me integrate, my stepfather enlisted me in First Tee – Coachella Valley, even though I couldn't comprehend what the coaches were saying. The coaches at First Tee were really encourag- ing, however, and made me feel comfortable. I grew up with First Tee and consider it a second home. It has provided me with numerous opportu- nities, too. As a student, I had the chance to attend the 2018 Life Skills and Leadership Academy in East Lansing, Michigan. It was one of the most in- credible experiences, and I am grateful to have been a part of it. In 2021, I became a First Tee lead instructor. Taking up this position has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I am able to pass on my knowledge to First Tee students. I am honored to be able to serve as a role model for the children, just like the coaches did for me when I was a participant. In the summer of 2023, I accepted the role of Outreach Coordinator. I am thankful for the oppor- tunity to become more active with the program and to go out into communities to spread the word. All in all, I am happy to say that First Tee has made a big impact on my life. From student, to coach, to outreach coordinator, I am honored to be a part of First Tee. Coach Karla Garcia Outreach Coordinator W hen we opt to take a leap of faith, we often face an intimi- dating unknown. About 18 months ago, I chose that path, trad- ing a comfortable life in Houston, Texas, for the allure of the Coachella Valley. Moving away from my loved ones and a promis- ing career was one of the most challenging deci- sions I've ever had to make. Fortunately for me, this leap of faith turned out to be a tremendous success, both professionally and personally. After college, I was adamant about incorporat- ing my golf passion into my profession. I utilized my marketing skills at reputed golf brands, such as Golfsmith and Topgolf. However, I faced a setback when the pandemic hit, leading to unemployment. Resolute to not remain idle, I started working my local PGA Tour Superstore. Little did I know that this role would eventually lead me to the Coachella Valley and First Tee – Coachella Valley. Adjusting to the Valley was a transformative journey, full of unexpected personal growth. Adapting to a different environment and finding a new job posed significant challenges. However, it also paved the way to my dream job at First Tee. In the role of Program Coordinator, I am eager to expand our golf programs and nurture relation- ships with our coaches, participants, and their families. Every day at First Tee – Coachella Valley feels purposeful, exciting, and worthwhile. Looking back, I'm grateful for the daring leap I took. Leaving my comfort zone led to this extraor- dinary journey. Coach Joy Willoughby Program Coordinator
