HISTORY IN
THE MAKING
n CELEBRATING SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE
MILESTONES FROM THE FESTIVAL'S AMAZING PAST
H
istory is made each and every day, but it's often
not until years later that we look back on events
and realize just how meaningful they were. In the
case of the Long Beach Golf Festival, which pos-
sesses nearly a century of history to examine, there have been
many milestones along the way. This year's playing in partic-
ular marks the milestones of a number of key events in the
Festival's past, and here are some of the most notable:

90TH PLAYING OF WOMEN'S CITY CHAMPIONSHIP
In the first half of the 20th century, athletic opportunities
for girls and women were scarce, but a Women's City Cham-
pionship was established in Long Beach in 1928. Played every
year minus three during World War II and two during the
pandemic, the event celebrates its 90th playing this summer.
"It's interesting, because when you look back at the list of
winners, the first winner was listed as 'Mrs. F.G. Wilson' –
they didn't even include the player's first name," said Tim
Forbes, the Executive Director of the Long Beach Golf Festi-
val. "These days it's fairly common for our Women's City
Championship contestants to be collegiate stars, and even to
go on to professional careers."
