WELCOME NOTE
W
hen I handed Taylor Montgomery
the Long Beach Open trophy in
August of 2019, nobody had any
idea of what was to come, or that it would be
well over two years before we were able to
welcome contestants to another Long Beach
Golf Festival season. So it gives me particu-
lar pleasure to say that the Beach is Back!
The pandemic wiped out what would've
been the 33rd and 34th staging of the long-
running Festival, which has carried on sev-
eral legacy tournaments that date as far back
as 1926. And there were certainly times
when it looked like this historic and presti-
gious event might be gone for good.
But a dedicated group of people who
could not fathom the idea of not having the
Festival refused to let it disappear – from
American Golf Regional Manager Gary
Johnson and his golf course general man-
agers and superintendents at Skylinks, El
Dorado and Recreation Park, to our out-
standing team of veteran rules officials, to
our good friends at Linksoul apparel.
And then there were the volunteers – the
lifeblood of the Festival – who, almost to a
person, never gave up on the Festival; their
only questions when contacted after a two-
year absence were "what can I do?" and
"when can we start?"
The amount of work to be done was
daunting, and made even more difficult by a
break-in where much of our equipment and
supplies were stolen or destroyed. But once
we got rolling, it was like riding a bike and
things came together quickly.
Now that the Beach is fully back, partici-
pants can expect the same quality experience
that they had in 2019 and years prior. We're
not resting on past laurels and know that we
have to be on top of our game from the
opening tee shot of the first tournament.
Personally, I'm most excited about greet-
ing the volunteers and players that I haven't
seen since 2019. It is the people that make the
Festival – and I've really missed the people.
Welcome to this year's Long Beach
Golf Festival – and best of luck to all our
competitors!
