S uperintendent Javier Gonzalez hasn't even been at Rancho Del Sol for six months, but he's already starting to make his mark on the golf course. A veteran in the golf industry since 1991 when he began at Skylinks at Long Beach Golf Course, Gonzalez grew up in a farming community in Baja California and has always enjoyed working outdoors with tools, tractors and equipment. "Golf made it that much more exciting and enjoyable," he said. Gonzalez oversaw the aerification of the greens at Rancho Del Sol in March, a process that helps keep the putting surfaces exceptional throughout the year. Here are some of his thoughts on the course and his new role: What are your primary responsibilities as Superintendent? I'm responsible for all phases of golf course maintenance and agronomy oper- ations, cost control and personnel. I also work closely with the head golf professional advising and coordinating on any issues related to golf course maintenance. u u u What is greens during aerification and why do you do it? Aerification is the process by which holes are put into the greens then filled with sand to allow air to get into the soil profile be- neath the green. Aerification is a crucial process to maintaining grass and course quality. Aerifi- cation primarily is performed to control organic matter, decaying roots and grass stems and to relieve soil compaction.
