S
uperintendent Javier Gonzalez hasn't
even been at Rancho Del Sol for six
months, but he's already starting to
make his mark on the golf course.
A veteran in the golf industry since 1991 when
he began at Skylinks at Long Beach Golf Course,
Gonzalez grew up in a farming community in
Baja California and has always enjoyed working
outdoors with tools, tractors and equipment.
"Golf made it that much more exciting and
enjoyable," he said.
Gonzalez oversaw the aerification of the
greens at Rancho Del Sol in March, a process
that helps keep the putting surfaces exceptional
throughout the year.
Here are some of his thoughts on the course
and his new role:
What are your primary responsibilities as
Superintendent? I'm responsible for all phases
of golf course maintenance and agronomy oper-
ations, cost control and personnel. I also work
closely with the head golf professional advising
and coordinating on any issues related to golf
course maintenance.

What is greens during aerification and why do
you do it? Aerification is the process by which
holes are put into the greens then filled with
sand to allow air to get into the soil profile be-
neath the green. Aerification is a crucial process
to maintaining grass and course quality. Aerifi-
cation primarily is performed to control organic
matter, decaying roots and grass stems and to
relieve soil compaction.
