DISC GOLF
A
rchitect Pete Dye deserves
all the credit for the stun-
ning design and challeng-
ing layout at Rancho Del
Sol Golf Club. But when it comes to the
new Rancho Del Sol Disc Golf Park on
site, the design accolades belong to
Avery Jenkins.
A former world champion and three-
time U.S. distance winner in the sport,
Jenkins is responsible for the blueprint
at the Rancho Del Sol Disc Golf Park,
which has seen the sport take off since it
opened last year.
A pro caliber, championship-level
track, the par-65, 10,280-foot layout
was built into the base of Mount Rus-
sell, and is one of the longest disc golf
courses in the state.
It also overlooks the surrounding
area, the desert, and the San Bernardino
mountain range in the distance.
"The natural and rugged setting pro-
vides a beautiful back drop for disc golf
and epic views of the Moreno Valley
below," Jenkins said.
The course offers a great variety of
shot shapes and distances, Jenkins
added, that require a multitude of dif-
ferent throws to navigate the rolling
hills and side slopes.
Many of the pre-existing golf greens
are now being used for disc golf greens
with bunkers that come into play on
several holes.
"The main objective when designing
the course was to fully utilize the prop-
erty, focusing on incorporating the natu-
ral features of the landscape and visuals
of the surrounding aesthetics," Jenkins
said. "Being a former 9-hole golf course,
this venue had a lot of open fairway
areas and it required a lot of fore-
thought to position the disc golf holes
in a way to avoid monotony while still
offering a legitimate challenge."
Mission accomplished.
In addition to seeing amateurs and
novices playing the course on a regular
basis, the Rancho Del Sol Disc Golf
Park has been the site of events for
the Professional Disc Golf Association
(PDGA), a professional skins game,
and the Inland Flight Club.
In his career, Jenkins has notched 63
victories in 20-plus years as a member
of the PDGA, including a World Cham-
pionship in 2009. He's also designed 13
courses in the United States and comes
from a family of successful players. His
mother, Sharon Jenkins, is a three-time
Masters World Champion, and his
sister, Valarie Jenkins, is a four-time
Women's World Champion. His father,
Leroy, won several national events.
"It was incredible to say the least
when I look back at the early days being
exposed to the sport at the age of 6,"
Jenkins said. "I'm entirely grateful for
being introduced to disc golf and the
many great opportunities it has offered
me throughout the years."
