HOW TO ELIMINATE YOUR SLICE
What you need to do to start hitting the ball with a draw • By David Curtis, PGA Teaching Professional

ost golfers don't understand
why the ball curves from left
to right (for a right-handed
golfer). When you have the knowledge
on "why," you'll be able to fix that slice.
First, let's understand the two main
ingredients that affect the ball: the club
face and the club path. The club face starts
the ball in a direction; the club path bends
the ball. A slice occurs when the club face
is open to the club path. A typical slicing
pattern is caused by swinging left of the
target with the club face open.
I first address the club face issue to
make sure the player understands what
an open and closed face means, looks, and
feels like. Then we address the club path
to make sure what left and right of the
target line means, looks, and feels like.
Turning your slice into a draw starts
with having the club face closed to the
club path. The goal is to start the ball out
to the right of the target, which will allow
it to have room to curve back to the
target. To make the ball curve, the path
needs to be swinging out to the right of
the club face direction.
