"Really good," said Director of Agronomy Tony Spannaus. "I think this is the best I've seen everything since I started here four years ago. All of the guest feedback has been outstanding as well." Another area looking sharp right now is the course's new "Butterflies in the Rough" area on hole No. 6. The program, which coincides with Classic Club's Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary certification, turns out-of-play rough into flower and tall fescue areas that attract butterflies. "I seeded the area last fall and everything is coming up re- ally good now," Spannaus said. Expect to see more of the beautiful nectar-feeding crea- tures the next time you come out to play. C lassic Club is well known for its Arnold Palmer design, hosting a PGA Tour event, and impeccable course conditions. But there are other great things about the property that may go overlooked. So, with the help of Director of Agron- omy Tony Spannaus, here are five things golfers might not know about Classic Club: 1) The club is owned by the largest non- profit in the Coachella Valley, the H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation and is held for charitable purposes. 2) The course was built with more than 5,000 adult trees and shrubs and does not include any desert scape, cactus, or palms. 3) As a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the club is home to 108 con- firmed, different avian species along with countless other types of animals. 4) The club is bordered by the Coachella Valley Preserve, home to the protected fringe-toed lizard. 5) The club has recently started to transition away from annuals to perennial California natives and drought-tolerant plants in landscaped areas, specifically with the creation of a designated pollinator garden.
