O
ne of the best ways to help ensure lower
scores when you get back out on the
course once Classic Club reopens on Septem-
ber 1 is to keep your short game sharp. In this
drill that you can do in your own backyard, PGA
Teaching Professional David Curtis employs the
use of a hula hoop to demonstrate how to hit
three differently flighted chip shots around the
green – low, medium and high. Most impor-
tantly, each of these three shots utilize the
same type of motion. As you'll learn from the
video, ball position plays an important role.
Keep your game sharp
during summer months

W
hile the course is closed for maintenance
this summer, here are a few ways to stay
sharp before the season begins:
> Keeping your body ready to play golf is
extremely important. Stretching and core exer-
cises are a good place to start. There are many
golf-specific exercise videos available online that
can be accessed on YouTube and Instagram. Find
a few that you like and try them out.
> Make 100 swings a day. To make this eas-
ier, break up the 100 swings by doing four sets of
25. I like to start slow for the first 25 swings, then
increase the speed of the swing each set.
> Controlling the low point of your swing
(with irons) is a great drill to work on at home.
Draw a line on the ground. As you make your
downswing, the goal is to have the club bottom
out on the target side of the line.
> Keep your equipment in good shape dur-
ing the off-season by making sure your grips
are in good shape. It is recommended to get
new grips after 40-50 rounds. You can also use
dish soap, warm water and a brush to get most
of the oils out of the grips so they last longer.
> Video analysis. Lastly, you can send me a
video of your swing for a "check up" to see if
you need to work on anything specific. For more
information, email me at dcurtis@troon.com.
