ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP Glendoveer Insider // 2020 Edition equality management and outreach and education. To be designated an Audubon Sanctuary for Golf, courses must develop and implement the plan, document the results, and are visited by Audubon International staff. Recertification is required every three years. Along with the national and international honors, CourseCo also met the high standards of the city it is located in by being honored the highest green busi- ness certification administered by Portland, Oregon, one of the top-10 greenest cities in the United States. Since taking over management of Glendoveer, CourseCo and the city have worked together to im- plement an extensive recycling program, switched high-energy lighting to LEDs, installed smarter con- trol boxes to make the irrigation system more effi- cient, opted to buy many products such as benches, napkins and trash bins built from recycled materials, and added solar panels atop the cart barn, which provides bout 35 percent of the total electricity. CourseCo has also tried to improve the health and aesthetic properties of its 242 mostly wooded acres, including setting aside parts of the course as natural areas, with no mowing, watering or chemical appli- cation, and also installed solar-powered aerators to three of its ponds that had no flowing water. That re- duced the algae build-up while at the same time making the ponds healthier and more natural look- ing without using chemicals. Protecting wildlife and producing more solar power are important parts of Glendoveer's environmental efforts.
