A
s Classic Club re-opened
November 13 following
its annual month-long
autumn closure for over-
seeding, playing conditions couldn't
be better to welcome golfers back to
the Arnold Palmer-designed layout.
And that brings a wide smile to the
face of Tony Spannaus, the course's
Director of Agronomy.
"Our conditions are terrific right
now," Spannaus said. "We had a re-
ally good overseed this year, and al-
most everything came in great. Our
greens are the best I've seen them
this early after overseeding. We were
able to dry them down and lower the
heights very quickly this year."
Returning golfers will also remem-
ber that Classic Club underwent the
first major bunker renovation in its
history two summers ago, and Span-
naus explained that the conditions
for playing shots out of and around
the sand remain vastly improved.
"The new turf around these areas
is healthy and clean," Spannaus said.
"The new bunkers play perfectly be-
cause they received a state-of-the-art
renovation with the newest and best
technology we have ever seen. The
ability of the capillary concrete and
drainage system is amazing – even
with a heavy rainfall of an inch or
more of precipitation, washouts are
rarely seen in this new bunker de-
sign, making them playable under al-
most any circumstance. The
aesthetics of the bunkers are also
vastly improved."
Spannaus said no major projects
are in the works, so he and his agron-
omy staff will continue to focus on
keeping the course in tip-top shape
every day. Off the fairways, he re-
cently added a pollinator garden on
the west side of the clubhouse, and
he is working on getting Classic Club
re-certified as a Certified Audubon
Cooperative Sanctuary.
