GREATER GOOD Course closure will allow for improved conditions W hile regular visitors to Classic Club may miss tackling the challenging golf course during its closure from July 5 through the first week in September, the temporary inconvenience will certainly be worthwhile once the track re-opens. The first bunker renovation project since the course opened in the mid- 2000s will see approximately 40 percent of its sand traps removed and the others overhauled to look and play like new. Director of Agronomy Tony Spannaus will oversee the work of a company that specializes in these types of projects, and is looking forward to hearing golfers' reactions once the improvements are complete. "A bunker renovation is a significant endeavor and investment," Spannaus said. "The contractor responsible for the renovation typically will have between 20-40 people working on a project like ours. They use an array of equipment such as sod cutters, excavators, backhoes, and more. In our case, they will be removing 185,000 square feet of sand." In addition to the remaining bunkers having new drainage, liners and sand, taking out so many of the traps will allow Spannaus's staff to work more efficiently preparing the course each morning to ensure the best possible playing conditions. "After completion, it will indeed look and feel like a brand-new golf course," Spannaus said. "They will be removing almost half of our bunkers and replacing them with turf, and this will allow the maintenance staff to thoroughly prepare the bunkers every day and have them play the way they are intended to play. The overall appearance will be significantly enhanced as well." Standard golf rates are $115 through May 26 with a twilight rate of $85 after 12:30 p.m. Both include a $15 voucher toward food and beverage purchases. From May 27 through the July 5 closure, summer rates will be $85, with the $15 voucher included.
