A TEE
TIME
A
ll golfers want to
play better every
time they tee up
the ball. This,
unfortunately, doesn't always
happen. We can shoot a
personal best of 79 one day
and then want to give up the
game after shooting 100 the
following day.
How do we to play better,
more consistent golf more
often? Here are 3 tips from
Classic Club's PGA Pro-
fessional and Tournament
Coordinator Alex Witt:

Play from the correct tees
We watch the Tour players
compete on courses that are
7,600 yards or more and we
all think we have to do the
same. The fact is, we need to
play from the correct tee box
with the correct yardage
suited for our game. Unless
you are hitting the ball more
than 300 yards every time
with your driver, you should
not be playing the back tees.
Try taking the philosophy
that if a Tour player is hitting
driver and a short iron into a
par 4, then you should
consider playing the tee box
that allows you to hit driver
and a short iron as well.

Know your capabilities
We all have had that Tin
Cup moment of going for a
par 5 over water in two shots.
This is a perfect example of
knowing your capabilities.
If you have 10 chances to
hit your second shot 250
yards from the green over
water, how many times are
you going to pull off that
shot? Be realistic. Instead of
trying to go for the green
with a miracle shot, consider
hitting a 7 iron safely down
the fairway that will take the
big number out of play.

Drive for show,
putt for dough
When we get time to
practice our golf game, what
is the first club many of us
like to hit? The driver. We like
to go out to the range and see
how far we can hit it. With
how little time people have
these days to practice, do you
think we should be hitting
driver for 45 minutes on the
range? Probably not.
A good or even halfway-
decent short game will
always make a bad round
better. When we have limited
time to practice, chipping
and putting should be first
on the list.
I am not saying don't ever
hit driver on the range, but
spending the entire time
hitting the big stick is not
going to give us the desired
results on the course.
