WYOMING DESERT
INTERCOLLEGIATE
TEXAS TECH
TAKES TITLE
C
lassic Club provided
a true test of golf for
some of the country's
best men's collegiate
players as the Wyoming
Desert Intercollegiate re-
turned to the course
February 22-24.
Twenty-one schools,
including six from Cali-
fornia, competed in the
54-hole tournament
hosted by the University
of Wyoming, and Texas
Tech took home the tro-
phy after edging Boise
State by a single shot.
"This tournament fea-
tured several ranked
teams, and the Classic
Club is a championship-
level golf course, so this
was certainly a challeng-
ing first event for the
start of our spring sea-
son," Wyoming Director
of Golf Joe Jensen said.
F
or the ninth straight year, Classic
Club played host to its biggest an-
nual fundraiser and an event that
has become beloved by residents of the
Coachella Valley and beyond.
"The Warburton," a celebrity golf and
music festival hosted by actor and golf en-
thusiast Patrick Warburton, brought to-
gether hundreds from February 28-March
3 for a four-day celebration that featured
great musical entertainment and golf, all
to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital and its efforts to treat and defeat
childhood cancer and other diseases. The
event raised $2.2 million for St. Jude,
bringing the total donated to the hospital
since 2011 to more than $12 million.
"This event embodies everything that
Classic Club is about," General Manager
Greg Rubino said. "The H.N. & Frances C.
Berger Foundation, our owners, enable us
to help so many people every year
through Classic Club, and this event is the
epitome of that charitable work."
This year's festivities included a Song-
writers Night, the Rheneypalooza Jam, the
Soiree, and a two-day golf tournament.
Rubino said there are a number of things
that make The Warburton a success.
"It's the combination of the celebrities,
music, golf, the amazing participants and
the fact that it benefits St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital," Rubino said. "So
many people tell me it's their favorite
week of the year. Those involved in the
event, from the participants to the organiz-
ers – led by our chairman, Clarke Rheney
and our entire board – are special."
Attendees and performers are already
looking forward to the 10th annual event,
scheduled for March 5-8, 2020.
