May, best known for losing a playoff to Tiger Woods during the 2000 PGA Championship, needed to finish in the top five at Q School to be fully exempt in 2019 or in the top 30 to be eligi- ble to compete in open qualifiers before Cham- pions events. May's once-promising pro career was derailed by chronic back problems in 2003. ••••• SHORT STUFF: Michael Block, the head pro- fessional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, will compete in the 2019 Desert Classic as the SCPGA Section Champion. He qualified for this month's event by winning last summer's SCPGA Section Championship at La Quinta Country Club, which will be one of the three courses in the Desert Classic. . . . Top SoCal fin- ishers on the LPGA money list in 2018 were Pep- perdine alumnus Danielle Kang (11th at $1.35 million) and USC alumnus Lizette Salas (23rd at $822,000). Kang also finished 16th in the sea- son-long Race to the CME Globe . . . Former USC star Sean Crocker is competing on the Euro- pean Tour. In December, he had a T9 at the Aus- tralian PGA and a T18 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Scotland . . . Tiger Woods had to wait 20 years between holes-in-one before recording his 20th career ace. Playing a recre- ational round with his son, Charlie, and Champi- ons pro Fred Couples on the day before Thanksgiving, Tiger used a 5-iron to ace the 210- yard second hole at The Madison Club in La Quinta. His most recent 1 before that came dur- ing the 1998 International at Castle Pines in Col- orado . . . . Ryan Smith of Carlsbad and Briana Chacon of Whittier both went wire to wire to win the boys' and girls' divisions, respectively, in the Toyota Tour Cup's fourth annual Southern California Junior Amateur Championship at Mo- rongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon.
