l DESTINATIONS OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x FALL 2018 x obsports.com T he very name Vanderbilt con- jures images of old-money wealth and a luxurious lifestyle. But while Cornelius Vanderbilt, whose heirs be- came the wealthiest family in America, did have a hand in helping to fund the nearby university that bears his name, the Vanderbilt Legends Club lives on its own glittering credentials. Opened in 1992, the home course for Vanderbilt University's men's and women's golf teams boasts two 18-hole classically designed layouts by Tom Kite and Bob Cupp. The par-72 North Course is accentuated by undulating greens and large, boldly shaped bunkers while playing through lush, open fields, as well as over and around numerous lakes and streams. The par-71 South Course, meanwhile, features a mix of wooded and open spaces and even more elevation changes. "Both are very playable, no two holes are the same and they can be very chal- lenging," said the club's General Manager David Laturre. "Each tap out at about 7,100 yards and both have an incredible stretch of finishing holes." As home to one of the premier college golf programs in the country, the skill level of the membership at Vanderbilt Legends Club mirrors that. "Vanderbilt Legends is a true golf club," Laturre said. "Almost half of our member- ship are single-digit golfers. It is a fun place to play with the most complete and expansive practice facilities in the region." That practice facility is set on 19 beauti- ful acres and includes multiple teeing grounds, a sterling short-game area, two practice putting greens and a state-of-the- art hitting bay. "You can practice any shot that you might encounter on the golf course at our practice facility," Laturre said. Along with the practice areas and acad- emy, the club also maintains the Little Course, a 9-hole, par-3 track located next door that is owned by the Tennessee Golf Foundation. "Our members have unlimited free access to this great little course," Laturre said. "They have wonderful youth pro- grams offered all season, including overnight accommodations for week-long golf camps with guest instructors during the summer months."
