How would you describe your
teaching style? I once made up a
word: Simductive. My theory is that if
you keep it simple, you can make it
productive. In other words, I want you
doing the least work as possible and
getting the most results. I try to never
overload my students and like to give
them a wide margin for success, rather
than a narrow road to perfection.

What do you enjoy most about
being a golf instructor? The way you
can influence someone's day, their ca-
reer, and even their life.

What's your favorite thing about
the game? How much it shows us who
we really are and how we react to all
kinds of situations from joy to
adversity – all in one of the
most beautiful settings one
could imagine.

What is your most treasured golf
possession? I have a picture with
Arnold Palmer when I went to the
Arnold Palmer Junior Camp at Bay Hill
and showed up in a Jack Nicklaus
Golden Bear golf shirt. The picture has
us both laughing and Mr. Palmer has
his hand covering the logo!

What might someone be surprised
to know about you? Many years ago,
I was invited to be part of a corporate
golf event in Napa. The CEO of the
company said "Joe, you have a great
sense of humor, would you be willing
to put something together for about 10
minutes for our golf awards presenta-
tion?" I did, and when I finished the
next person who walked on stage was
none other than Jay Leno. So you could
say I once opened for Leno.

What is your motto on the lesson
tee? My job is to make the tough seem
fun and attainable. If we're not having
fun, we need to be doing something else.
