l DESTINATIONS OB SPORTS GOLF & LEISURE x FALL 2018 x obsports.com T here are times when golf courses can feel like they've been squeezed onto the parcel they sit upon. Trying to fit 18 holes on a piece of land not naturally conducive to it can result in a layout that just doesn't feel it has the chance to properly breathe. That is not the case at Dalhousie Golf Club, located on the banks of the Missis- sippi River in the southeast corner of Missouri near historic Cape Girardeau. The par-72 Nicklaus-designed course opened in 2002, but feels like it has been there for centuries. "We had 900 acres to work with and were not restricted with the routing," said Founder and Managing Member Cord Dombrowski. "There were not any natural obstacles we had to deal with. It was truly a blank canvas on which we had to work." That resulted in a course that is both natural and non-manipulative. "The features fit where they should," Dombrowski said. "Each hole is distinct in and of itself." Just as the course is big and bold, the approach to playing it can be as daring, or as measured, as a player wants. "You can take an aggressive approach if the situation dictates or you can play the safer angles and still be able to shoot a good round," Dombrowski said. Before construction began there were two goals. The first was to create a friendly member course; the second was to provide a challenge to accomplished players. As part of the first goal, the course has gener- ous landing areas and access to every green. For more skilled players, the humps and bumps, speed slots and contours strategically placed in landing areas and green complexes keep things interesting. "The course has enough rolls and slopes that each hole plays differently day to day," Dombrowski said. "The green com- plexes are intriguing and fun to play into. That translates into enjoyable golf." While the club's most distinctive charac- teristic is the land it sits upon, the mem- bership is also special. "We are a regional/national club," Dombrowski said. "We have members from 13 states. Our local members look forward to visiting with our national members and vice versa. This dynamic provides a uniqueness to our weekend games and inter-club events."
